One of Japan's most chilling yokai legends tells of Te-no Me—“Hand-Eyes.” Once a blind merchant, he was waylaid and killed on a lonely road, his last wish to see his killers birthing a vengeful spirit. At night he prowls deserted paths, hunched in tattered robes, his face a blank mask. When he thrusts out his arms, two bloodshot eyes bulge from his palms, each scanning the dark. Travelers say you can hear his ragged breathing before he strikes, claws slashing. Some legends whisper he hunts to find his murderer's voice—call out and swear guiltless, and perhaps he'll pass you by. But beware: Te-no Me mistakes any traveler for the one who robbed him of life.
