The grid-of-squares game board concept is really not as old as one might think. Before "year zero" most board games were linear race games. The race tracks were folded in a zig-zag fashion, but still linear.
Petteia was a playing field that simulated movement in all of the cardinal directions. In fact the game board was referred to as the "polis" - the city - where the activity took place as from the throne of an overlord.
