Yokai Bestiary Book Two

Published: Thu 26th Mar

This is our second book of creatures from Japan, commonly known as yokai. For centuries, tales told by elders about ghosts and supernatural beings stirred the imaginations of everyday people. Passed down by word of mouth through generations, these stories shaped the island's traditions and customs.

You'll be able to surprise your players again and again with unique stories and beings, each with their own abilities. You might even befriend some of them, while with others you'll have to battle or perform a ritual to banish an evil entity or spirit. In any case, we've tried to recreate every creature faithfully, and our artist Julia, with great care and love, has illustrated each yokai exactly as we imagine them. All these pieces should help you craft an engaging campaign or a memorable encounter.

ABOUT THIS BESTIARY
40+ Unique Stat Blocks: From the mischievous CR 1/2 Sunekosuri to the devastating CR 13 Ashura, ensuring dynamic encounters across multiple tiers of play.
Deep Folkloric Lore: Authentic retellings of Japanese legends, exploring the specific origins, motives, and psychological depth of each spirit.
Adventure Hooks: Ready-to-play scenario seeds that seamlessly introduce these creatures into any existing campaign or homebrew world.
Tactical GM Guidance: Strategic advice on running complex encounters, utilizing environmental hazards, and incorporating specific ritual banishments instead of brute force.
Artwork: Full-color, evocative illustrations for every entry, ready to be displayed at the gaming table or integrated into your VTT.
While every creature is rooted in authentic tradition, some tales have been expanded or re-imagined to make them clearer and more game-ready.

The mechanics presented in Yokai Bestiary 5E Book Two force players to engage with the folklore itself, rewarding research, cultural understanding, and strategic preparation over optimal combat builds. Slaying an entity might require reciting specific sutras, answering riddles, or restoring neglected shrines. It is an indispensable tool for Game Masters looking to inject authentic horror, mystery, and cultural depth into their tabletop campaigns.

RULES AND RECOMMENDATIONS
All creatures are built for Dungeons & Dragons 5E and play best with a party of two or three heroes, levels 2—10. To get the most out of the bestiary—especially the spells, abilities, and stat blocks—players will need access to the core 5E rulebooks: Player's Handbook 2014 or 2024 (PHB), Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG), Monster Manual (MM), and Xanathar's Guide to Everything (XGE).
