Ancestor of Halma and Chinese Checkers, Grasshopper was developed in the early 1800s in England.

It is suspected that the game was invented by university students toying around with a set of checkers. According to some game historians, it was originally called "Hoppity". The first commercially published version was apparently in 1948.
